The construction sector works with collective leave periods that are set per province in sectoral agreements. For West Flanders, the 2026 dates are July 6 through July 19. If you start with a new employer in June, you have not yet built up full leave days for the summer. Your holiday pay is calculated based on your performance in the previous year. In that case, the construction holiday may be partly unpaid, unless you request an advance from the holiday fund. Discuss this with your employer or union in good time.
Some construction companies offer the option to work overtime before or after the construction holiday. You can later convert those overtime hours into extra leave or have them paid out. Not every company allows overtime during the summer months, so check the work regulations.
Self-employed construction professionals are not automatically covered by the collective construction holiday. So you may continue working if you want. Yet many self-employed people choose to close during the same period, because clients and suppliers are often closed and sites are idle.
